Instructor: William Kirby
This class introduces students to the basic operation of a 35mm
single lens reflex (SLR) camera.
In this class, you'll learn the principles and the subtleties of
exposure and the elements of good composition. You'll develop
black and white film and then develop your photos in the CPC
darkrooms.
You'll need to commit between five and seven hours per week for
Fundamentals of Film Photography. We'll spend two hours in the
classroom and at least two to three in the darkroom. You'll use
the rest of the time for shooting assignments.
Each class builds on the skills you learned the previous week, so
it's important to consistently attend classes and darkroom
sessions and to complete your weekly shooting assignments on
time.
You must bring your camera and lens to each class, including
darkroom sessions. You should also come with paper and a pen to
take notes.
CPC will provide all darkroom equipment and items including
darkroom chemicals, enlargers and driers. There is no need to
build a darkroom at home. We also provide you with the chemicals
and equipment you'll need to develop your film.
You'll attend six darkroom sessions in addition to the weekly
classroom meetings. By the time you complete your final darkroom
class, you'll have a good knowledge and comprehension of black
and white photo printing.
For the first class, you should bring:
- Your 35 mm SLR camera (i.e., camera can have interchangeable
lenses)
- A 50mm fixed focal length lens is preferred, but not required
- Your camera manual, if you have it
- Your personal calendar/date book
- A notebook, pen and pencil
Materials List for Class (feel free to contact ybrikllib@yahoo.com for materials questions or recommendations):
- 3 rolls of Kodak Tri-X film
- 2 rolls of Kodak Plus-X film
- One box of 25 or 100 sheets of 8x10 RC Multigrade Photo Paper
- Negative Archival Storage Sleeves (25 sheets)
- One Paterson Universal Developing 2-reel Tank and 2 reels (Paterson tank is optional, but highly recommended)
Some additional thoughts:
You'll learn to understand your camera better - all of the
buttons, knobs and attachments that seemed so intimidating when
you signed up for Fundamentals of Photography will make sense to
you. You'll have a collection of negatives that you developed!
You'll watch your first blank piece of photo paper become a photo
right before your eyes. You'll learn about technique; you'll
learn a little chemistry and you'll begin to understand who you
want to be as a photographer.
