Fundamentals of Film Photography
February 27, 2012–April 9, 2012
This class introduces students to the basic operation of a 35mm single lens reflex (SLR) film camera. You will learn the principles and the subtleties of exposure and the elements of good composition. You will also learn the process of developing film and how to print your images using the CPC darkrooms.
You’ll need to commit between five and seven hours per week for Fundamentals of Film Photography. We’ll spend two hours in the classroom and at least two to three in the darkroom. You’ll use the rest of the time for shooting assignments. Students are also required to attend six darkroom lab sessions, in addition to the weekly classroom meetings.
Each class builds on the skills you learned the previous week, so it’s important to consistently attend classes and darkroom sessions and to complete your weekly shooting assignments on time. You must bring your camera and lens to each class, including darkroom sessions. You should also come with a paper and pen to take notes.
CPC will provide all darkroom equipment and items including darkroom chemicals, enlargers and driers. There is no need to build a darkroom at home. We also provide you with the chemicals and equipment you will need to develop your film.
By the time you complete your final darkroom class, you should have a good knowledge and comprehension of black and white photo printing.
Please bring the following items to the first class:
- Your 35 mm SLR camera (i.e., camera can have interchangeable lenses)
- A 50mm fixed focal length lens is preferred, but not required
- Your camera manual, if you have it
- Your personal calendar/date book
- A notebook, pen and/or pencil
Materials List for Class (feel free to e-mail Bill Kirby at ybrikllib@yahoo.com for materials questions or recommendations):
- 3 rolls of Kodak Tri-X film
- 2 rolls of Kodak Plus-X film
- One box of 25 or 100 sheets of 8×10 RC Multigrade Photo Paper

Intermediate Film Photography
February 28, 2012–April 10, 2012
This class further explores the subtleties of correct exposure and introduces students to more advanced darkroom techniques. You’ll learn to view photography with a more experienced, thoughtful eye. During the seven week class, you will be given five shooting assignments. You should be prepared to spend some additional time each week to work in the darkroom printing the assignments. You’ll be introduced to polycontrast filters, burning and dodging and other printing methods. We will critique your work each week at the beginning of the class. This will be followed by recommendations on how to improve both your shooting and printing techniques.
There will be lectures on composition, lighting and the history of photography.
For this class, your camera must be a 35mm SLR (single lens reflex). You should bring your camera, lenses, negatives and prints to every class. This class also includes a weekly darkroom assignment beginning the first week of class, so students should be prepared to attend CPC twice each week.
