CPC is proud to be included on the Chicago Reader’s Best of 2008 list!
Town Hall Meeting - This Weekend
CPC’s Town Hall Meeting is this Saturday, November 15, 10 AM – 1 PM. The meeting will be held at CPC. We’ll review the progress of our strategic planning, roll out our new organization structure and more. Coffee and bagels will be provided. Please RSVP to events@chicagophoto.org if you’d like to join us
Want a FREE Epson Printer?
CPC has upgraded its digital lab printers and is offering the old printers to any interested community member for free. We have several Epson Stylus Pro 2400s available for the taking. These printers are not in pristine shape and have been modified to dump excess ink to an external tank (this was a common problem with this model owing to the high usage the printers received in our labs). However, they should still produce a nice photograph. Please note that these printers are offered as-is; CPC won't repair or replace anything on the printers.
If you're interested, please stop by CPC and pick one up between Saturday, November 15 and Monday, December 8. They will be stacked on a table near the bookshelves; you can just come by and grab one.
Upcoming Workshops
We have a variety of specialty workshops coming up – register now!
- Digital Boot Camp Saturday, December 6, 10 AM – 5 PM
- Polaroid Transfer Saturday, December 6, 10 AM – 1 PM
Holiday Bake-Off
It's that time of year again - the first snowfall is just around the corner, holiday carols will hit radio play lists any day and CPC will soon feature tables full of treats and goodies baked by our own community members. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, December 17, 8 PM for this year's bake-off. All students and community members are invited to bring a dessert or savory dish to share. Judging will be organized by LeJean to determine which students will walk away with first, second and third place prizes (worth valuable discounts off tuition in the 2009 calendar year). CPC will provide beverages and paper products like plates and napkins. Hope you can join us!
More on Going Green
CPC’s recycling program is up and running, with recycling bins and new trash cans on the first floor, the mezzanine and downstairs. There are signs posted by each recycling bin letting you know what exactly can be recycled. Please help CPC be more green by recycling all aluminum cans, plastic bottles, Starbucks cups, paper, etc. Please rinse out all food and drink containers before placing them in the recycling bin.
In keeping with our new green initiative, we are also recycling all of our used printer ink and print toner cartridges. If you’re in the digital lab and change the ink in any of our printers (the 3800s, the 4800s and the 2400 downstairs), please place the empty cartridges in the cartridge recycling bin (in the mezzanine, to your immediate left as you go up the stairs). This is also a blue bin, although smaller than the one we use for general recycling. When the ink recycling bin is full, it will be emptied and all of the cartridges will be shipped to a recycling center.
Use CPC for Your Personal Ink Cartridge Recycling! The ink cartridge recycling center that we use accepts many different types of ink cartridges and print toner cartridges. Please feel free to use CPC for your personal ink and toner cartridge recycling. Click here to find the list of accepted ink cartridges. If your personal printer is listed, please feel free to deposit your empty ink cartridges into the container at CPC and we will recycle them for you. If you have any additional questions or comments on recycling at CPC, feel free to contact Sara Miller at sara.miller@chicagophoto.org.
Thanks for helping CPC go green!
Say "Cupcake!" (not "Cheese!")
Cupcakes aren't just for kids these days. Cupcake-only bakeries are opening coast to coast and cupcakes have become the wedding cake of this millennium. Tapping into his own interest and the accessibility of research subjects, our own Justin Bradley (Digital Photo I and II) launched www.cupcakerace.com in March 2008.
“I've always had a sweet tooth, and I also had an interest in photography,” said Justin. “I had occasionally thought about putting together a website with cupcake reviews for fun, but it was really the idea of photographing them that led me to actually do it. So I'd say a big part of my motivation for the site was to try to make some interesting photos of something and show them.”
Read the full story on Cupcake Race. And be sure to visit www.cupcakerace.com and to try at least one of the recommended cupcakes based on Justin’s reviews.
What are you doing online with your photography? We're interested in sharing your work with our community. Please contact us at snapshot@chicagophoto.org with information.
Community Outreach – Cameras Galore!
Many thanks to Jerry Prace, Dave Thiem, Ron Goldman and Betsy Lent, who sorted, cleaned and tested over 20 cameras (mostly SLRs) donated by our generous photographers to the CPC Community Partnership programs. The cameras are used by program participants in photo groups we nurture at two shelters for homeless adults.
Do you have lenses that you're not using anymore? Please consider donating Nikon and Canon compatible lenses to our program. Lens caps, camera body caps, unexpired film, camera cases, SLR camera bodies and point-and-shoots are all also needed and welcome. A donation box is available at the reception desk.
